Now introducing the Intel Core 2 Quad, boasting a 54% performance increase over the previous processor core2Duo. You can get a detailed product review and specifications from :

With three quad-core processors in its 2007 product line, Intel is banking on a multi-core future: Core2Quad, Core2Extreme, and Xenon.
They do help boost power efficiency and increase headroom for virtualization, all on a 64bit platform.
Intel seems to be going for two new processor products every year, which consequently increases their obselecense ratio. My advise would be to buy the cheapest quad-core regardless of clock speed. They will all provide the quoted +50%, however your computer sub-systems will limit your processor's demands.
I am not expecting much hype in the processor/semi-conductor market this year from Intel. AMD has some room for improvement with their acquisition of ATI, while Intel can only realease more multi-core processors and focus on other peripherial computing components.
