In a somewhat unsurprising rumour TechCrunch writes that the next generation iPhone due for release in mid-2011 will feature a chip making the handset compatible with both GSM and CDMA networks but not the future 4G LTE network.
The article from TechCrunch also speaks in some detail about the upcoming CDMA only version of the iPhone 4, expected to arrive sometime in January of 2011. It has been speculated heavily in the last couple of weeks that the arrival of a CDMA iPhone 4 will mean the end of AT&T's exclusive hold of the iPhone and Verizon will begin carrying Apple's handset as well.
TechCrunch goes onto state that Apple doesn't want to be a "guinea pig on the new LTE networks" and will therefore refrain from offering a 4G compatible version of the iPhone 5.
