5 best ways to fix the oscars, but you only need two - by Abinyah Walker

Abinyah's Commentary:
The Oscars only needs two major fixes.  Less categories means we spend more time on the important ones and let people thank their co-workers properly. And let the general audience in on some the voting. Doesn't even have to be a major category, just something.

1. who cares...
2. who cares...
3. who cares...
4. Cut the categories
We now trudge through 24 Oscar categories during the show, which is probably 15 categories too many. Nobody cares about best sound mixing, best sound editing, best costume design, best visual effects, or any award with the word "short" in it. If these categories were all awarded off camera, that would free the show of all its clutter—and make us care more about the big moments (like when Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win best director, which just felt like a footnote at the end of a long night). Right now, the American Idol finale seems to have more star power than the Oscars. It's also half as long.

5. Which brings me to my last point: let America vote.
It doesn't even have to be on the actual categories; the Academy can retain control of that. But people just want to be invested—this is why Idol is the No. 1 show on TV. Maybe they can cast the star of a new Marvel comic book movie. Or pick which '70s comedy should be remade. These decisions are usually in the hands of studio bosses. But what if for one night, the public—the people that pay good money for all this entertainment—could try their hand at it? I'll tell you what that would mean: a truly populist Oscars.
